Mindungsan in June: Korea's Best-Kept Summer Hike

Most visitors know Mindungsan for its autumn silver grass. In June, its wide open ridges turn a deep, vivid green — and almost nobody is there.

Most people who know Mindungsan know it from October — the silver grass festival, the golden-brown ridges, the crowds. What fewer people know is that June might actually be the better month to visit.

The ridges turn a deep, vivid green. The air is cool near the summit. And because autumn is the famous season, summer visits are noticeably quieter.

Mindungsan sits at 1,118 meters above Jeongseon in Gangwon Province. Its name literally means "bare mountain" — and that's the point. Unlike most Korean peaks, there are almost no tall trees near the summit. The result is an open, sweeping ridgeline that feels more like a Scottish highland than a typical Korean hike.

What Makes It Different

Most Korean mountains are densely forested all the way to the top. Mindungsan is the opposite. The treeline drops well below the summit, leaving the upper section as open grassland with panoramic views in every direction.

In June, the grass is at its greenest. The wide ridges catch the breeze, making it noticeably cooler than hiking through a closed forest. And the doline — a natural crater-like depression just below the summit — is one of the more unusual geological features you'll find on a Korean mountain trail.

The hiking trail itself is not technical. Route 1 from Jeungsan Elementary School is the standard approach: about 3.8km to the summit, taking around 1 hour 30 minutes one way. The gradient is manageable for most fitness levels, though the upper section opens up and offers no shade.

Getting There from Seoul

This is where it gets honest: Mindungsan is not a quick day trip. Plan for it properly and it's worth it. Try to rush it and you'll feel the distance.

By train: The most scenic option is the Mugunghwa train from Cheongnyangni Station in Seoul to Mindungsan Station. Journey time is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the service. There are around 5 departures daily. Cheongnyangni Station is on Seoul subway lines 1, 5, and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line — accessible from most parts of the city.

From Mindungsan Station, walk 20 minutes or take a short taxi to Jeungsan Elementary School, the main trailhead.

By car: About 2 hours 45 minutes from central Seoul via the expressway. By car, you have the option of Route 1 (park near Jeungsan Elementary School) or Route 2 (park at Mindungsan 2nd Parking Lot near Neungjeon Village — shorter but steeper).

Note for foreign visitors: Train tickets for this route are regional Mugunghwa trains, not KTX. You can book through Korail's website or at the station. Foreign cards work at ticket machines. This is not the high-speed train network, so the journey is longer but the scenery along the way is part of the experience.

Before You Go

Start early, especially on weekends. The open ridges mean full sun exposure by mid-morning, and the trailhead can get busy on weekends even in summer. Weekdays are noticeably quieter.

There is almost no shade near the summit. Bring sun protection, more water than you think you need, and insect repellent. The restrooms are near the parking area — use them before you start.

Don't miss the doline just below the summit. It's easy to walk past if you're focused on reaching the top, but the natural depression is one of Mindungsan's most distinctive features and worth a few minutes.

If you're coming by train, check the return schedule before you start hiking. Services back to Cheongnyangni are limited — around 5 per day — so missing one means a long wait.

Is It Worth the Trip?

For visitors who want to see Korea beyond Seoul and the standard tourist circuit, yes. Mindungsan is the kind of place that doesn't appear on most English-language travel lists, and the summer version — green, quiet, cool — is genuinely different from anything in or around the capital.

It works best as an overnight trip. Stay in Jeongseon, visit the morning market, and take a morning train back. Trying to do it as a pure day trip from Seoul is possible but leaves little margin for a relaxed hike.
