KTX vs. Express Bus: Seoul to Busan Compared

KTX takes 2h 15m. The express bus takes 4–5 hours. But price, booking ease, and comfort tell a more nuanced story — especially for foreign visitors.

Seoul to Busan is the most popular intercity route in Korea. Almost every foreign visitor makes this trip at some point — whether it's for the beach, the food, or just to say they did it. KTX is the default recommendation, and for good reason, but it's worth knowing exactly what you're trading off.

KTX: the fast option

KTX (Korea's high-speed train) covers the Seoul–Busan route in about 2 hours 15 minutes from Seoul Station. Trains run every 30 minutes during peak hours. Seats are spacious, there's a luggage rack, and the ride is smooth — no traffic, no stops.

For foreign visitors, the key issue is booking. You can't easily book through the official Korail website without a Korean phone number. The reliable workaround is Trip.com or Klook, which both accept foreign cards and send you a QR code by email.

Express bus: the cheap option

The Gyeongbu Expressway express bus runs from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (고속터미널, on subway line 3/7/9) to Busan Central Bus Terminal. Journey time is typically 4–5 hours depending on traffic — and traffic on this route can be brutal on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Tickets are cheap: usually ₩23,000–30,000 one-way depending on the class. Premium buses have wider seats and more space. You can buy tickets at the terminal counter — foreign cards generally work at the ticket machines.

The real comparison

Time: KTX wins by about 2–3 hours.

Price: Bus is 30–50% cheaper depending on when you book KTX.

Booking ease: Both are manageable for foreigners, but KTX requires going through a third-party platform.

Comfort: KTX is more predictable — no traffic delays. Bus comfort varies.

Luggage: Both handle luggage fine. KTX has overhead racks; buses have underseat storage.

Our verdict

For most visitors, KTX is worth the price premium. The time saved is significant, the experience is smooth, and you avoid the anxiety of traffic delays. Book on Trip.com a day or two ahead to get a seat — last-minute KTX tickets to Busan often sell out on weekends.
